Peakfinder Updates

The choice of Jones Peak as this month's feature mountain was a natural one given the passing of Ken Jones, the "Grand Old Man of the Mountains." He was an irreplaceable window into the history of the Canadian Rockies and those of us who were privileged to spend time with him were always treated to yet another story we hadn't heard before. He was highly respected by everyone in the mountain community and his sparkling personality will be missed by all who knew him.

We're always pleased when visitors point out errors in Peakfinder. This past month the family of an airman after whom Mount Gaunce was named emailed to say that there were two airmen named Gaunce who had been killed during World War II and that the wrong one was referred to on the website.

Thanks to Robert Boyko for some fine photos including an excellent one of Mount Fay.

This past month we have added Kakwa Provincial Park to the "Peaks by Park" option.

If you have a favourite mountain photo or any information about the peaks of the Canadian Rockies that you would like included in Peakfinder please contact <dave@peakfinder.com>.

Please note that all of the previous newsletters have been archived and are available on the site. If you're interested in other esoteric lists, unusual mountain names, etc. browse through the earlier issues.

February's Unusual Canadian Rockies Name

WATERMELON PEAK
William L. Putnam and party named this mountain in 1966. Their first ascent party carried a watermelon to the summit, whereupon they ate it despite poor weather. The name remains unofficial.

DR. ROBERT G. BRETT
Dr. Robert G. Brett began his career as a medical supervisor with the Canadian Pacific Railway by performing surgery in a boxcar during the years of railway construction. Later he became Banff's first doctor and opened a combined hospital and spa to enable visitors to enjoy the "healing waters." In 1886 he opened the Grandview Bath House and Villa at the Upper Hot Springs. Dr. Brett became involved in numerous business projects in Banff including an opera house, drugstore, transportation service, and the selling of bottled, "Banff Lithia Water."

In 1888 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the North West Territories. He served for thirteen years before being appointed Alberta's second Lieutenant Governor in 1915.
