JULY/AUGUST  2008 NEWSLETTER

Peakfinder Updates
Busy summer here at www.peakfinder.com as we take lots of photos ourselves and others in the mountain community submit their summer photos to the website. Many thanks to Don Beers, Gerry Hopkins, and others. It may take a while to make all these great photos available to everyone but we'll get them up eventually.

Although most of the mountains in the Canadian Rockies are gray, there are lots of names that were chosen because of the colour black. These may be found by clicking on "Peaks by Name Category" and then looking for names related to the colour black. Some of them are, Black Mountain, Black Rock Mountain, Blackface Mountain, Blackrock Mountain, Ebon Peak, and Roche Noir.

If you have a favourite mountain photo or any information about the peaks of the Canadian Rockies that you would like included in Peakfinder please contact daveb at peakfinder dot com.

Please note that all of the previous newsletters have been archived and are available on the site. If you're interested in esoteric lists, unusual mountain names, etcetera, browse through the earlier issues.

July/August's Unusual Canadian Rockies Name

RUFUS PEAK
The mountain was named in 1922 by the Inter-provincial Boundary Commission. "Rufus" is the Latin word for red which is the colour of some of the rock on this peak.
Enter "Rufus Peak" to learn more about this peak.

Look who's honoured in the Canadian Rockies

JOHN ROWAND

Named in 1954, Mount Rowand honours John Rowand, a North West Company fur trader who was involved in the building of the fort on the site of what is now the City of Edmonton.
